When we get to school, Mason’s waiting for me at the locker Bree and I share.

“Do you mind if our second date is a surprise?” he asks.

I try to throw Bree a knowing look, but I think I get caught when Mason smiles. “I don’t mind at all,” I tell him.

“Cool. How about I ride the bus home with you again?”

“Now hold up.” Bree makes a face. “I can’t have Leila riding the big cheese all week. Who else is going to sing backup for me?”

Eva comes walking down the hall just at that moment. “I think I know a good temporary replacement,” I say.

Bree rubs her hands together and smiles. “See, Lei, this is why you are on the principal’s list every semester.” Bree looks off past my shoulder and cups her hand over her mouth. “Hey, Eva. Wait up!”

As Bree takes off down the hall after Eva, I turn back to Mason. He’s wearing a regular white tee, with a few beaded bracelets on his wrist stacked over a vintage-looking wristwatch. As a girl who pays attention to detail, I can appreciate his consistent aesthetic. “So what’s up with this little surprise place you’re taking me?”

Mason smiles and leans closer into me until his lips are almost kissing my earlobe. “It’s a surprise.”

Just the warmth of his breath on my ear sends shivers down my arms. And this time, as I watch him walk away to first period, I don’t hide my smile behind my hand.
